By Robert Marks

Many not for profit organisations perform a crucial role in society by helping out the sick, homeless and other members of society who often need help from others. In view of this, the news in recent times that many charities are set to have their government funding cut is terrible news for those who run or manage a charity.

Whatever the reason is for these cuts, the truth is that charities of all types are seriously having to consider how they get funding and support and this is likely to mean some extremely difficult decisions. For many this has already meant redundancies, staff being asked to cut hours and in some cases, the charity having to stop their activities completely.

For many charities, these options are really a last resort and so they should now be taking steps to cut costs whilst at the time as trying to raise donations. Attracting new and maintaining existing donors is always something charities are fighting to do but the encouraging news for charities is that the credit crunch does not necessarily mean people will stop giving to charity. In fact, some recent high profile fund raising events like Children in Need in the United Kingdom has seen their best fund raising performance ever.

Therefore if there are still people willing to give money, charities are going to have to attract these by being great at marketing. Combined with this, many charities and community groups are looking at some of their largest outgoings and expenses and deciding if these can be cut or reduced. One such outgoing that all charities face having to pay is the purchase of charity insurance or charity liability insurance. There are now charity insurance experts who can provide quotes to large and small charities that could very often result in insurance savings.

A simple search of Google, Yahoo or any online search engine will show a handful of charity insurance brokers who could help your organisation pay less. And with every dime, cent or penny now counting more than ever, completing an online form or making a quick phone call could very well be the best use of your time if you and your charity are looking to cut costs.

And using a charity insurance broker and expert also means you do not have to cut cover or service. In fact, by using an insurance for charities expert, you and your charity could actually end up getting more cover for less. Give it a go and make sure your charity survives in the hardest of times.

What is a charity challenge?
According to the Institute of Fundraising: “the factor which distinguishes ‘a charity challenge event’ is that the participant is also receiving a more than notional benefit, which in many cases has a monetary value attached, and seeks to fundraise from supporters in respect of their participation”.

Can smaller charities get in on the act?
In a word: yes! Supporters of smaller charities can raise funds by taking part in any number of ‘open’ overseas challenge events, arranged by charity challenge tour operators such as Classic Tours, Charity Challenge and The Ultimate Travel Company’s Ultimate Challenges.

Charity challenges: the pros and cons
There’s no doubt that overseas challenges can have huge benefits for charities:

Publicity: Overseas challenges are a great way of gaining public attention, particularly if a celebrity is involved.

Long-term support: Charities testify that the intensity of the adventure holiday challenge experience, with its sense of shared achievement and real hardships overcome, often translates into long-term support.

Sustained advance exposure: Kate Favell, World Experiences Event project manager at the British Heart Foundation, points out that those participating in major overseas travel challenges are likely to be engaged in fundraising for many months before an event takes place. Charities therefore benefit greatly from sustained public exposure.

Mission and message – the double whammy: For charities such as the British Heart Foundation, overseas travel challenges are also a great way of reinforcing the lifestyle choices they aim to promote more generally: exercise, healthy eating etc.

But it’s not all positive. It’s important to think about the following, too:

The economic climate: Charities suggest that the downturn has undoubtedly affected overseas challenges, but in subtle ways. According to Denise Davies, Head of Community Fundraising at the Motor Neurone Disease Association, more modest weekend and European challenges have suffered; people are now focusing on their ‘must do’ experiences. In response, the MND Association has changed its strategy, focusing on offering the overseas charity challenge ‘big 3′: Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, and the Great Wall of China. Kate Favell at the BHF reports that fundraisers are also finding it harder, and needing longer, to raise sponsorship. So it’s important to keep in touch with participants to help them if they need extra inspiration or creative fundraising ideas.

The charity/challenge balance: Charles Getliffe at charity travel tour operators Classic Tours, warns charities against being seduced into offering multiple exotic events. It’s not ‘appropriate’, says Charles, for charities to set themselves up as travel agents: fewer, more targeted events send out a better signal all round.

Tour operators: role and choice
The number of companies specialising in overseas charity challenges is growing, and the tour operator you choose will play a crucial role in ensuring your success. In theory, operators handle the logistics of arranging the adventure holiday travel challenge, while charities are responsible for promotion and the collection of monies.

In practice, it’s rarely clear cut, and tour operators usually provide extensive advice and support on such issues as marketing, legal considerations and planning. (It’s worth noting that The Ultimate Travel Company’s Ultimate Challenges recommend beginning to plan any overseas challenge event 12-14 months in advance.)

The Institute of Fundraising recommend investigating both the tour operator and their subcontractors thoroughly – for example, look at safety records and ethical policy – and cross-check with any relevant industry bodies. Consider your own rights as a charity if you are unable to proceed with your planned challenge, and also what kind of deal the operator is offering participants: for example, are they being asked to sign unreasonable liability waivers?

How much can overseas challenges raise?
Obviously, this will vary greatly but, as Charles Getliffe at Classic Tours reiterates, it is important always to keep The Charity Commission’s guidelines in mind. Any challenge should raise 50 per cent, and ideally 60 per cent, more than the cost of administrating and operating the challenge.

Denise Davies provides the following example:

A recent MND Association Machu Picchu trek cost each participant £2,900. The funds raised by the 38 participants totalled £191,000. £75,000 of this was spent on operating and administrating costs, including a payment of £67,000 to the tour operators, resulting in a final total of £116,000 net being raised for the charity.

Which travel charity challenge?
The fun bit. But while a Peruvian pony trek might grab the attention, for some charities a European bike ride is more feasible. Plus, the latter will earn you low carbon points as well: don’t forget to think about possible critical coverage your event might attract. Other issues to think about include:

Other charities’ activities: The Institute of Fundraising recommend researching other charities’ activities to avoid conflicts and over-saturation (Everest can only accommodate so many sponsored mountaineers!).

Location: Consider likely hazards – natural and human – and consult the Foreign and Commonwealth Office if necessary. Publicity can also be harder to come by if the location you choose for your event is obscure.

Current support: What are the interests of your current supporters? Profiling current donors in order to identify areas of interest is essential, plus it’s important to be guided by their likely capabilities. An Everest challenge isn’t ideal if most of your supporters are in their seventies!

Bespoke or open? Tour operators typically offer ‘bespoke’ challenges (exclusive to the charity concerned) and ‘open’ challenges. Open challenges are conceived and planned by tour operators themselves, and participants then sign up to raise money for whatever cause they choose. As Connie Potter of The Ultimate Travel Company points out, bespoke challenges require financial commitments from charities – for example, a non-refundable deposit for group flights – and therefore aren’t always an option for smaller organisations. However, the benefits of bespoke events are considerable: exclusive branding, and a greater team spirit (due to the fact of a uniting common cause), which is more likely to translate into long-term support. Classic Tours’ Charles Getliffe advises charities who aim to enlist more than 30 participants to opt for a bespoke event.

Legal issues
As the Institute of Fundraising points out, the legal issues surrounding overseas charity challenges are extremely complex, and charities must seek independent legal advice. While the Institute can’t such provide advice itself, it suggests the Charity Law Association as one source of help.

The Institute’s own Charity Challenges Events Code of Fundraising Practice is essential reading for anyone wishing to set up a challenge event. It offers a source of best practice guidance, but should not be used as a substitute for legal advice. The Institute also emphasis that the Charity Challenges Events Code must be read in conjunction with the Code of Fundraising Practice as a whole.

Being the kind of person that scams hard earned money from trusting people is bad enough, but being the kind of person that profits off the misfortune of others takes a special kind of evil. As hard as it is to believe, there are people and companies out there that try to pose as charities to profit off of would be donors. A bad side effect of this is that it makes people suspicious of legitimate charities that are doing a great deal of good. Like with other scammers, there are ways of spotting a crook posing as a charity at the most crucial time, before they get your money. People running these types of scams especially seem to come out right after a natural disaster, trying to capitalize on people’s urges to do good and help out.

The first thing is to do some basic research on who has contacted you. Ask them questions, the information relating to who they are should be readily available to them. Do a search of the charity name they give you on the internet, add the word “scam” or “fraud” to the search bar, and see if a list of complaints filed against this supposed charity comes up. You can even contact the consumer protection agency in your state or area who should have information on most charities. When dealing with anyone online, either a charity or a seller, make sure you get a physical address and a phone number from them. This is another possible piece of information you can research, find a reverse phone number lookup site and see who comes up as the owner of that phone number. Also, do a search on the address and see if anything negative comes up there as well.

Look out for charities with names that sound very similar to well known charities. Most charities, like most businesses, want to distinguish themselves from other charities, not be confused with other charities. Many times a fraudulent charity will name themselves something that sounds similar to The Red Cross, The United Way, or another widely recognized charity and hope to confuse people who are actually trying to donate to the legitimate charity.

Legitimate charities do not try to use high pressure tactics to get you to donate to them. If the person communicating with you is using lots of hype and not taking no for an answer, then this is a sign that the charity may not be real.

Much like any business dealing, be very caution about unsolicited emails. Most legitimate charities do not contact possible donors via spam messages. Spam is usually an attempt to either advertise something you don’t need or to get you to give up sensitive personal data. If you do not know who the message is from it is best to just delete it.

If you are inquisitive and want to know how donations are going to be used, or who donations are going to directly benefit, then ask these questions. Legitimate charities should be willing and able to answer all your questions accurately. It is also a good idea to research charities as you most likely want to donate to charities that have the bulk of your donation going to those in need and not to salaries and administrative expenses of the charity itself.

For the most part, unless using a bank transfer, no charity will need personal information like your Social Security or bank account numbers for your donation to be processed. Charities that insist they need this information for their records may not be legitimate and may be looking to acquire your personal information so they can use it to empty your bank account.

Most legitimate charities do not run sweepstakes and lottery type contests. Some imposter charities try to get more people to donate to them by telling them they offer a sweepstakes or lottery where your donation may come back to win you a large sum of money. This is a sure sign that you are dealing with scam artists and not real charities doing good work.

When you have to knowledge of what to look for and what to ask, the chance of a fraudulent charity succeeding in its attempt to steal your well meaning donation becomes less likely. Be aware that legitimate charities act in a professional manner and have strict rules. Legitimate charities are very forthcoming about what the donation is used for and their own background and information as well. If the charity you are dealing with is being secretive, then it is time to look for a different place to make a donation.

Cheerleading fundraising activities help to maintain an adequate supply of funds for financing trips, buying new equipments, participating in competitions and other related events.

Innovation Speaks Volumes

Cheerleading fundraising ideas have evolved a lot with time. You get to see modern trendy variations replacing the traditional fundraising activities like car washes and bake sales. The current cheerleading fundraising ideas tend to have a creative bent to make them more appealing. Cheerleading fundraisers can also be added to by financial donations and support from local businesses to add to the volume of the collected money.

The Fun Of Cheerleading Squad Fashion Shows

With some fundraising squads, a yearly fashion show is a noted feature that pulls the crowds. Such shows are perked up by garments donated from the neighborhood stores and these are returned to the stores after the show is over. Such shows fix an entry charge of one dollar and opens stalls for distributing snacks and drinks among the audience. This is really an active and beneficial fundraising technique and can help a cheerleading squad to earn hundreds of dollars.

The Social Service Option

You can think of community service as a popular cheerleading fundraising activity. The cheerleading squads can arrange a bottle drive in Saturdays and Sundays afternoons or any other holiday. The best time to hold bottle excursions is the Memorial Day weekend when it can expect the full presence of the community members. The fundraisers should inform the residents a week in advance about the time they will come for the bottles. After the bottles are picked, the residents give the cheerleaders small amounts of money, which is stored for future sports requirements.

A Savory Delight

Cheerleading fundraising ideas should be different by being crazy. The wilder you can be in your endeavors, the more eyeballs you will grab. Keeping in tow of baseball team activities like dunk tanks and pie tosses, some fundraisers organize pudding slings. This apparently messy thing is a great fun to watch and participate with people throwing balls of chocolate, butterscotch, vanilla, or pistachio pudding on their preferred cheerleading member.

Saying It With Youthful Colors

Some fundraising activities enjoy wild popularity because of the plain reason that they are organized in schools and are loaded with youthfulness. It is really cost effective to cut out a number of stars from glossy papers dyed in school colors. You have to make these stars attractive by attaching glitters and stickers on them. You can open a stall or two to sell these decked up stars for a dollar or more. These stars can also be used to decorate the strategic locations within the school premises. Also, make a big star and ask the students to sign their names upon it by way of showing their support.

Fun With Balloons

Another way of holding the attention of young people in a fundraising drive is to organize a “Balloon Tag”. For this, you need a lot of balloons. Fill them with helium for making them float. You can use a center table amidst a youthful gathering to sell these balloons. A balloon bought by a person must be tagged for someone and that person has to wear that balloon to show his support for the tagged individual. You can charge a dollar for tagging the balloons and include students and teachers alike in this activity.

But whatever you do, just try to have fun and it will go over well. That is the general, unspoken rule of fundraising.

Lots of individuals and groups need to raise money. But what are the best fundraising ideas?

Below we have created a list of our top 10 fundraising ideas for you to consider:

1. Discount Card Fundraising: Discount cards are great fundraisers because they offer your customers great value. You basically go out and get 10 or 12 local merchants to agree to advertise for free on the back of a discount card you are creating. You have the card created and printed and then sell the cards for $10 each. You make a lot of money, the merchants get a lot of traffic and the card holder gets some great deals. This is a great fundraising idea.

2. Cookie Dough Fundraising: Everyone loves freshly baked cookies which makes selling cookie dough so easy. You sell using a brochure and collect your money when pre selling. At the end of your sale you place a bulk order and you can use the money you collect during your sale.

3. Candy Fundraising: Most people have been approached to buy a candy bar before. The odds are good you bought one or more for a couple of bucks. Candy has been one of the easiest fundraising ideas for years and will continue to be as long the price of a candy bar is affordable.

4. Car Washes: Lots of groups hold car washes to raise money. You’ve most likely seen the kids jumping up and down flashing their signs trying to get you to stop and let them wash your car. Many advertise the car wash as being free and simply ask or donations. Some groups may make a lot of money doing these but the feedback we’ve gotten is that adult seems to do most of the work and the amount raised sometimes is disappointing based on the effort required.

5. Gift Catalogs: Seasonal shoppers or gift catalogs have been used by school and large groups for years. You basically sell seasonal gifts from a catalog much the way you sell cookie dough. The best time of year for gift catalogs is the early fall when people will buy Christmas and other holiday gifts from you. They get an easy place to shop and you make the money you need.

6. Donations: Lots of groups have opted away from selling products and simply ask people to donate money. There are lots of online resources that can help with making the donation process easier. The major benefit is that there is no cost and your group gets all of the money given.

7. Lollipop Sales: People sometimes dismiss selling lollipops because they are so cheap. But it is the price point that makes lollipops so attractive for raising money. You can purchase lollipops in just about any shape and flavor so sports groups can get sports shaped lollipops, etc. Most groups purchase lollipops for $.25 and sell them for $.50 so they double their money on every lollipop sold.

8. Green Fundraisers: With so many people wanting to be eco friendly there are now many options available to sell green products for pre sell fundraisers. In fact one of the best fundraising products is now selling flower bulbs. You can make 50% profit or more and not have any risk while at the same time offering a product right for the times.

9. Spaghetti Dinner: In the old days these worked extremely well and can work well know especially for churches or schools. Try to combine the dinner with another event that will be well attended and then offer a spaghetti dinner for a reasonable price. Get volunteers to cook and serve the meal. PTA’s might offer a dinner like this before a PTA meeting.

10. Fundraising Scratch Cards: These scratch cards have been designed by fundraising companies to help you raise money through donations. Basically you give each person in your group a scratch card that has 50 concealed dots. You get people to scratch off 2 dots to determine a suggested donation amount. In return for the donation the donor is given a sheet of valuable coupons as thank you gifts.

While there are tons of different fundraising ideas these are our top 10 fundraising ideas to consider today.

Despite the new look, Jay Leno’s new show’s viewer ratings are dropping. Some say it’s because he changed his comedy writers. Others are saying it’s his time slot. But one thing is for sure, if his show continues to lose viewers, his show will not be on very long.

The news comes as Leno’s ratings continue to soften. Six weeks since his 10 p.m. debut of “The Leno Show”, he hit a series low (1.2) on Friday. Then episodes on Monday (1.4) and Wednesday (1.5) were the lowest yet for those respective nights, with Tuesday (1.8) matching its low.

Hosting a fundraising event is very similar.

The time slot of your event is important. You might have people accustomed to a Friday night and switching to what appears to be a better time slot, like a Saturday, could have negative effects. Just like Jay Leno switching his time slot. However, hosting an auction on a Saturday is traditionally the best day for an event and usually brings in larger groups of potential donors. Although having a better time slot (like Jay Leno) is not the only thing to rely on.

Jay Leno’s comedy writers and their group meetings are a lot like the planners and committees of well-ran profitable fundraising events. Planning the time the auction starts, when to have the food, scheduling entertainment that adds and not distracts from the event, and when the event will end. The list goes on and on.

By the time the television show starts and is live on the air, there is little that can be done to affect the show, just like an auction. It’s the time and hard work spent before the event that will make the night a success. To have an event filled with energy and guests that aren’t just following the mundane motions of going to a fundraising auction, but are involved, excited, and emotionally connected to the charity auction, takes the commitment and professionalism of a group of knowledgeable people ready for the curtain call.
